Service Description: This web service contains flood information for Okaloosa County, FL. The layers within this service are BFE in Floodway, FEMA FIRM Zones, FEMA FIRM Panels, and Coastal Barriers.
The FEMA FIRM zones are used by the federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to designate the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) and for insurance rating purposes. These data are the flood hazard areas that are or will be depicted on the Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM).
The FIRM panel corresponds to the geographic area where effective flood hazard information is depicted on the FIRM panel.
The Coastal Barriers Resources Act (CBRA) strives to protect ecologically sensitive, geologically vulnerable, and the scenic and recreational values of barrier islands along the East Coast, Gulf of Mexico and Great Lakes of the United States. Naturally, Barrier Islands serve as important buffers to inland areas by absorbing the brunt of coastal storms. The law aims to protect barrier islands by restricting federal funding on designated islands. This table only applies to coastal areas that have specially protected areas designated by Congress on John H. Chafee Coastal Barrier Resources System (CBRS) maps. Authoritative CBRS boundary locations are shown on these maps administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Normally these areas are already shown on existing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for the area. CBRS areas have restrictions Federal funding (including flood insurance coverage) after specified dates for new or substantially improved structures. The Coastal Barrier Areas seeks to minimize the loss of human life, wasteful expenditure of federal revenues, and damage to fish, wildlife, and other natural resources associated with the coastal barriers along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts and the Great Lakes. These areas prohibit federal funding for new construction after October 1983.

Zone A is the flood insurance rate zone that corresponds to the 1-percent annual chance floodplains that are determined in the Flood Insurance Study by approximate methods of analysis. Because detailed hydraulic analyses are not performed for such areas, no Base Flood Elevations or depths are shown within this zone. Mandatory flood insurance purchase requirements apply.
Zone AE is the flood insurance rate zones that correspond to the 1-percent annual chance floodplains that are determined in the Flood Insurance Study by detailed methods of analysis. In most instances, Base Flood Elevations derived from the detailed hydraulic analyses are shown at selected intervals within this zone. Mandatory flood insurance purchase requirements apply.
Zone VE is the flood insurance rate zone that corresponds to areas within the 1-percent annual chance coastal floodplain that have additional hazards associated with storm waves. Base Flood Elevations derived from the detailed hydraulic analyses are shown at selected intervals within this zone. Mandatory flood insurance purchase requirements apply.
Zones X is the flood insurance rate zones that correspond to areas outside the 1-percent annual chance floodplain, areas of 1-percent annual chance sheet flow flooding where average depths are less than 1 foot, areas of 1-percent annual chance stream flooding where the contributing drainage area is less than 1 square mile, or areas protected from the 1-percent annual chance flood by levees. No Base Flood Elevations or depths are shown within this zone. Insurance purchase is not required in these zones.
Zones X 0.2 PCT ANNUAL CHANCE FLOOD HAZARD are areas of moderate flood hazard and are the areas between the limits of the base flood and the 0.2-percent-annual-chance (or 500-year) flood. No Base Flood Elevations or depths are shown within this zone. Insurance purchase is not required in these zones.
